1
Assess your skin problem. Is your dry skin all over or just in patches? Is the dryness severe, moderate or mild? Severely dry skin is red, flaky or chapped looking and may require attention from a doctor or skin care specialist. Many people have dry skin seasonally and may need extra moisturizer in the winter months or from sun exposure. Moderately to mildly dry skin is more common and there are many over-the-counter products to choose from.
2
Determine the cause of your dry skin. Dry skin can be caused by many things such as eczema or psoriasis, sun exposure, dehydration, aging or genetics. Knowing what causes dry skin helps you choose the right moisturizer for your skin.
3 Choose petrolatum or oil-based products for severely dry skin. Petroleum jelly or shea butter quickly soothes flaky skin and locks in moisture. Such products are best used at night as they can soak through clothes and leave the body very greasy.
- Look for products that have natural oils such as grape seed and lanolin for severely dry skin on the face.
- Olive oil can be used anywhere on the body and is an inexpensive natural cure for dry skin.
