6 Quick Beauty Fixes for All Your Summer Skin Issues

A Spotless Décolletage
A retinoid cream—either prescription, like Retin-A, or over-the-counter (look for retinol in the ingredient list)—will lighten discoloration and soften rough patches caused by sun damage. Two to four treatments with a KTP laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) can more dramatically minimize both the brown spots and redness caused by UV exposure. (Cost: At least $500 per session.) A fractional nonablative laser, like the Fraxel Dual, greatly improves not just the color but also the texture of the skin. You'll probably need at least two treatments. (Cost: Around $1,000 each.)

Silky Legs
A rich shaving cream and a four-blade razor (try Bic Soleil Bella, $7) are all you need to get smooth legs for at least a day or two. Laser treatments can drastically reduce the amount of hair on your legs (or bikini line or underarms) for good. After three monthly sessions, most patients have 50 to 80 percent less hair in the treated area, says Tina Alster, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center. (Cost: About $350 for each laser session.)

Veinless Legs
Self-tanner works like magic to make leg veins less noticeable. Try L'Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Clear Self-Tanning Gel ($10.50) for natural color and nonstreaky finish. Sclerotherapy—in which a solution is injected into individual veins—will get rid of those blue squiggles permanently. Until recently, most doctors used saline, which could sting, but many have now switched to the painless Asclera, made with a detergent solution called polidocanol (approved by the FDA last year). Two or three treatments are usually necessary, and the veins look worse before they get better in about a month. (Cost: Around $350 per treatment.)

Scar-Free Skin
While a stretch mark or scar is still red (which can last from months to years), three or four treatments with a Vbeam pulsed-dye laser will improve its appearance considerably, says Arielle Kauvar, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center. (Cost: At least $300 per session.) Once the mark has turned white, the best treatment option is a nonablative fractional laser. Four or five sessions can improve the mark's color and texture from 50 to 90 percent. (Cost: $400 to $1,600 each.) For an immediate fix, use a heavy, full-coverage concealer (like Dermablend Quick-Fix Concealer, $22); match it to the darker skin around the mark.

How to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type

Skin cancers are more prevalent than ever: one out of every five Americans will get skin cancer at some point in their lives, and the disease will kill more than 12,000 people in the US in 2013. About 90 percent of the time, the risk of developing skin cancer is directly related to the amount and intensity of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure one receives from the sun. Fortunately, it’s easy to limit excessive UV exposure — and lower your risk of skin cancer — with the regular use of sun protection. Sunscreen is an important part of the equation, and finding the right one for your specific needs can be a challenge. Check ULTA 20 off coupon  for choice.
Sunscreen Basics
Seventeen sunscreen ingredients have been approved for use in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); they include both chemical and physical substances.8 [See Table 1.] Chemical sunscreen ingredients, such as PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and cinnamates, absorb UV rays and convert the sun’s radiation into heat energy, while physical sunscreens (such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) deflect and scatter the rays before they penetrate your skin. Both types can be effective and safe if used properly. The question is, which sunscreen ingredients are right for you? For example, babies and toddlers have different sun protection needs than adults, while sunscreens made for dry skin may not suit people with acne or rosacea. The following guide should help you find the right sunscreen for your skin’s needs.

Incidental vs. intense exposure:
For starters, the kind of sunscreen you use may vary depending on the type of outdoor exposure you are expecting. For incidental sun exposure — when you are outside only for minutes at a time — a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15, which filters out about 93 percent of UV radiation, is usually sufficient. Your sunscreen should have broad spectrum protection, meaning it effectively protects against significant portions of both the ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) ranges of the light spectrum. Most broad-spectrum formulas contain multiple sunscreen ingredients. For extended, intense exposure, you should use a broadspectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. SPF 30 filters out up to 97 percent of the sun’s UV radiation; SPF 50 filters out up to 98 percent.
  1. For children’s skin: Chemicals can irritate children’s sensitive skin; PABA and oxybenzone in particular have been associated with skin reactions.9,10 The physical sunscreens zinc oxide and titanium dioxide tend to be better tolerated by people with sensitive skin and can usually be found in sunscreens for babies and children. Also, since getting children to use sunscreen is half the battle, try spray sunscreens or tubes with colorful packaging, which children may find more enjoyable to use. (Spray sunscreens should not be applied directly to the face; sprays should be misted into the hands, then spread on the face.)
  2. For allergy-, acne-, and rosacea-prone skin: Patients with allergy-prone skin or conditions such as acne or rosacea should avoid products containing preservatives or fragrances, as well as those containing PABA or oxybenzone. Again, the ingredients least likely to cause skin reactions are the physical sunscreens, as well as those made with salicylates and ecamsule.10 Allergy prone and rosacea patients should also avoid sunscreens containing alcohol. Patients with acne, however, may find gel formulas, which usually contain alcohol, more drying and less likely to aggravate acne. Acne-prone patients should avoid greasy sunscreens (often marketed as “creams”), since they may exacerbate breakouts; the UVB filter ensulizole has a lighter, less oily consistency than most other chemical sunscreens.11 However, people on topical acne medications, which tend to be drying, may find gels too irritating on their sensitized skin and may benefit from a light lotion or cream base. Since some acne medications increase sun sensitivity, making wearers more vulnerable to burning and skin damage, rigorous daily sun protection is especially important.
  3. For dry skin: Dry skin can benefit from moisturizing sunscreens. Numerous moisturizers are used in sunscreens; popular ones include lanolin, oils, and silicones such as dimethicone. Moisturizing sunscreens are often formulated as creams, lotions, or ointments, so look for these terms on the label.
  4. For people with melasma, a history of skin cancer, or very fair skin: For patients with a blotchy brown discoloration of the skin called melasma, those who have had skin cancer, or those who are very fair, sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ is recommended daily for extra protection. Since most people do not actually apply enough sunscreen to achieve the SPF listed on the container, frequent reapplication (after two hours out of doors or immediately after swimming or sweating heavily) is especially important.
  5. For darker skin tones: Individuals with darker skin who tan easily and rarely burn may feel they do not need to use sunscreen. However, like sunburn, a tan is the result of DNA damage from exposure to the sun’s harmful UV radiation. Darker-skinned people may also be wary of using physical sunscreens, especially titanium-based products, because they can look chalky and white on the skin.12 Newer preparations, however, tend to be micronized, which means the particles are small enough to allow them to blend in and disappear into the skin. Chemical sunscreens are also an option; look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15+.
  6. For the older person: Although older individuals may have already received large amounts of UV light exposure in their lifetime, they can still benefit from sunscreen use. At any age, unprotected sun exposure increases the risk of developing new skin cancers and precancers; it also accelerates skin aging, leading to age spots, wrinkles, sagging, and leathery skin. Older people with decreased mobility may have a hard time applying sunscreen to areas such as the legs and back; for them, spray-on sunscreens may be a great option — they are now available both in chemical and physical formulations. Sprays should be applied until an even sheen appears on the skin.
Conclusion
Sunscreen is an important part of a sun protection regimen that should also include seeking the shade, avoiding UV tanning, and wearing protective clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. By educating yourself about your many sunscreen options, you can be confident that the product you choose will fit your particular needs, offering you the best protection from the sun’s harmful rays — and helping to ensure that you use it regularly. After all, the sunscreen you apply consistently is the best sunscreen of all. ULTA 20 off coupon helps you save on any online deal. Check it for shopping!

How to Choose Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Choosing the right moisturizer for dry skin can be daunting when you're confronted with endless bottles, jars and vials at the cosmetics counter. When you choose a moisturizer for dry skin, consider the severity of your problem, the causes, and when you use the product, then look for ingredients that target dry skin. Moisturizer for dry skin comes in 4 main forms -- salves and oils, creams, lotions and serums. You may need more than one type of moisturizer for different areas.Check ULTA moisturizers for taking care of you hands with ULTA 20 off entire purchase
1
Assess your skin problem. Is your dry skin all over or just in patches? Is the dryness severe, moderate or mild? Severely dry skin is red, flaky or chapped looking and may require attention from a doctor or skin care specialist. Many people have dry skin seasonally and may need extra moisturizer in the winter months or from sun exposure. Moderately to mildly dry skin is more common and there are many over-the-counter products to choose from.

2
Determine the cause of your dry skin. Dry skin can be caused by many things such as eczema or psoriasis, sun exposure, dehydration, aging or genetics. Knowing what causes dry skin helps you choose the right moisturizer for your skin.

Choose petrolatum or oil-based products for severely dry skin. Petroleum jelly or shea butter quickly soothes flaky skin and locks in moisture. Such products are best used at night as they can soak through clothes and leave the body very greasy.
  • Look for products that have natural oils such as grape seed and lanolin for severely dry skin on the face.
  • Olive oil can be used anywhere on the body and is an inexpensive natural cure for dry skin.

6 Tips To Help You Choose An Effective Night Cream

When I was in my 20’s, choosing a night cream was way off my plans. Actually, even choosing carefully a day cream according to my skin’s type or needs was a kind of luxury for me since I never used to have time to make a proper research on face creams or it was also because my skin didn’t seem to need anything special.

Well..that was in my 20’s. In my 30’s, I started getting more conscious of what kind of skin care products I use since my skin proved to be sensitive and kind of fussy to certain products and ingredients which could cause redness and sometimes an  unpleasant feeling.
And then, the need for a night cream appeared and I knew that I had to look for certain things before I choose one that is really worthwhile. So, let me explain here what to look for if you want to buy a night cream.

What Is a Good Age to Start Using a Night Cream?

First, you are only going to use a night cream if your skin needs it. For most women and men the age of thirty and onwards is the most suitable age to start using one. For some other people, it is late 30’s. I think that on average after 34 is a good age to start using one.

Not All Night Creams Are Suitable for Every Type of Skin

It always depends on the skin issues one may be having. For example, if you have wrinkles and fine lines, you can look for a night cream that has a stronger anti aging effect, containing antioxidants that will boost its resistance to aging and fight the already existing wrinkles.

Have You Checked Online?

Surprisingly, some of the best night creams that contain the most effective ingredients are sold only online and they are often overlooked because people simply don’t know they exist.
So, when looking for an effective night cream, make sure that you don’t just focus on those brands that are popular but really take the time to look for those products that are actually the most beneficial.

Look for Those Products that Have Fair to Good Reviews

While this may come as a surprise to many people, you really don’t want to purchase a night cream or any product that has nothing but perfect reviews.
The reason for this is that each individual is different and a product that works for one person may not going to work the same for another one.
By focusing on those night creams that get average to good reviews (3 ½ to 5 stars) you are much more likely to get a clear picture of just who that night cream works for and who it doesn’t.
This will help you decide if the specific night cream is going to work for you.
By using those night cream reviews to guide you and taking the time to explore all the products out there, you are much more likely to find a night cream that suits your skin best.
There are a huge number of products on the market today that are designed to lighten or bleach the skin so here a few tips to help you choose the best product with ULTA 20 off entire purchase

5 Tips For Selecting The Best Skin Whitener

If you are looking to purchase a skin whitening cream you will need to consider a few things; what particular skin issue do you want to treat and what active ingredients are needed to achieve the desired result? There are a huge number of products on the market today that are designed to lighten or bleach the skin so here a few tips to help you choose the best product with ULTA 20 off entire purchase

1. Know your skin type
Skin type means that you can have normal, dry, oily or combination skin. Some skin bleaching products may contain ingredients like lemon juice that can be quite drying for your skin and other products could contain harsh chemicals that can easily irritate sensitive skin and cause unwanted side effects if used on a consistent basis.
Skin colour is caused by the amount of melanin (brown pigment) present in the upper layers of the skin. People of different ethnicity differ, not only in skin colour, but also in the actual structure of their skin. African and Asian skin types tend to have a thicker and more compact dermis that means they will have fewer wrinkles than white skinned people. Darker skin tends to retain more moisture and sheds it’s outer layers more often than white skin. Black skin has larger melanosomes and more  fibroblasts than white skin which can lead to more abnormal scarring and keloid formation.
Skin whitening products can work on all skin colours but the results may take a little longer in dark skinned individuals.
2. Decide what result you are hoping to achieve
While many people are wanting to lighten their overall skin complexion, most people will choose a skin whitening cream to treat a number of different skin conditions associated with hyperpigmentation.  A good whitening cream will be designed to reduce the appearance of dark pigmentation by inhibiting the production of melanin in problem areas. Good whitening creams will treat problems such as:
  • hyperpigmentation
  • dark spots
  • melasma/chloasma
  • acne scars
  • dark underarms, elbows or knees
  • sun damage
  • birthmarks
  • uneven skin tones
3. Consult an expert
If you have concerns about hyperpigmentation or skin problems it might pay to consult a doctor or a dermatologist who can examine your skin condition and recommend a suitable treatment or skin whitening product.
Be aware that skin whitening creams in the US may contain hydroquinine, a chemical bleaching agent that has been banned in some countries. While concentrations of up to 4% may be prescribed by a doctor in the US there is much controversy around this ingredient. Hydroquinine is believed to be carcinogenic and has been reported to cause skin irritation, photo-sensitivity and ochronosis if used for prolonged periods of time.
Fortunately there are a large number of hydroquinine-free skin whiteners available today that offer a much safer alternative.
4. Check the ingredients

When choosing a skin whitening cream it is important to do some research and carefully read the ingredients listed for each product. You want to avoid skin lighteners that contain hydroquinine, mercury or steroids and look for an all natural product. While these ingredients have largely been banned for use in skin care products there are still skin whitening creams out there that contain mercury. These may come from countries where production is not regulated.
Try to pick a skin whitener that contains only natural ingredients that are proven to whiten skin, without the side effects of using harsh chemicals. Ingredients to look for include bearberry extract (arbutin), mulberry extract, Gigawhite, kojic acid and Vitamin C.
My daughter suffers from hyperpigmentation on her face, chest and arms. She has tried a number of products but had the most success with Meladerm by Civant Skincare. It contains only natural ingredients, including those listed above, and is suitable for all skin types. It is specially formulated as a “pigment reducing” cream and can be used on all parts of the body and face.
More information can be found on the company website ULTA.com
 5. Always use sunscreen
It is important to remember that any skin whitening treatment will make the skin more photo-sensitive so it is best to limit your sun exposure when treating hyperpigmentation. If you do go out consider wearing a long sleeve shirt and  hat to protect your face, body and arms.
Choose a high SPF sunscreen that block’s both UVA and UVB rays from the sun. The UVA rays are responsible for the tanning and ageing of our skin while the UVB rays cause sunburn and potentially skin cancer.
Neutrogena makes a broad spectrum sunscreen for faces with a SPF of 110. The Neutrogena Age Shield Face Lotion  is oil-free and blocks both types of rays, preventing the UVA rays from penetrating the skin’s surface and offering more deep cell protection.

5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING SAFE SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Read Delphinia’s top 5 tips on how to choose safe skincare:
Tip 1: Know which claims are regulated (and which are not)
‘Hypoallergenic’, ‘dermatologically tested’, ‘no-tears formula’,‘for sensitive skin’, ‘fragrance-free’, ‘natural’ – many of the claims on the lotions and washes we buy are just  that, claims. Claims which aren’t regulated, investigated or substantiated by governments or regulatory authorities.

Even the term ‘organic’ is regulated in its use only in certain countries and its application (according to each country’s laws) often allows for loopholes and gaps  in a product’s ingredients, which can allow suspicious chemicals and synthetic ingredients in. So your best bet? The ingredients list – the only thing that (almost) never lies!
Tip 2: Learn to identify the most commonly used petroleum-derived ingredients
Many commercial brands contain petroleum derivatives. Yes, you read that right – petroleum derivatives, i.e. from crude oil. Some of the more common ones are:
  • Mineral Oil a.k.a. Paraffinum Liquidum,
  • Petrolatum a.k.a. Petroleum Jelly,
  • Propylene Glycol, PEGs (Polyethylene Glycol),
  • Polysorbates (usually followed by a number) and DEA/MEA/TEA.
The reason they’re used? They’re cheap, abundant and can last pretty much forever on the shelf. The downside? At best, they’re at risk of being contaminated with carcinogens during manufacturing and are linked to the rise in allergies. At worse, they are themselves carcinogens and are known toxins which are applied direct to the skin on a daily basis. And if that’s not enough, they’re terrible for the earth!
Tip 3: Be concerned about the preservatives used
Preservatives are necessary to extend a product’s shelf life but there is a huge spectrum of preservatives used – from natural to synthetic – and some have come under a cloud of suspicion in recent years.
  • Parabens (such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben) have been linked to tumours in the breast and skin, and a possible role as ‘endocrine disruptors’ in mimicking hormones.
  • Phenoxyethanol – a preservative commonly used in natural and organic products – is known to depress the central nervous system.
  • Benzyl Alcohol – another commonly used preservative in mainstream and natural products – has been associated with contact allergy.
Tip 4: Avoid unnecessary fragrances
Let’s begin with synthetic fragrances – which make up most of the fragrance ingredients in skincare products. The vast majority are synthetic compounds derived from – you guessed it – petroleum, as well as coal tar. These include VOCs (volatile organic compounds) linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders
and allergic reactions.
Research has shown that these airborne chemicals have direct access to the brain and
our internal systems through the nasal passages. Essential oils, used in many natural
products for their fragrance, have been shown to emit similar chemicals when over-used. The worst thing? Fragrances are protected as ‘trade secrets’ so manufacturers aren’t required to list what goes into them in the first place.
Tip 5: Start reading labels and choose ingredients you recognise
A good rule of thumb is if it doesn’t sound like something you’d like to put in your mouth, it’s probably better off not on your or your little one’s skin. We apply lotions, washes and creams to our skin (our single largest organ!) every single day and these often contain ingredients that are questionable at best.
Even some naturally-derived ingredients are less beneficial than they appear.
  • Sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate and cocamidopropyl betaine, both derived from coconut oil, are known to irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions.
  • Cocamide DEA/MEA are known skin irritants and potential carcinogens.
  •  Lauryl glucoside and decyl glucoside (both derived from vegetable sources) have yet to be tested for safety.
